Spiritual Protection From Toxic People: What I'd Tell a Friend Over Dinner

There's a question I get asked in some form all the time, by clients and by people in my own life: "How do I stop letting certain people drain me? I'm tired of coming home empty."

When a friend asks me that over dinner, I usually give a long, rambling answer at the table. This is the tidier version, written the way I'd say it to anyone I care about. If you've been feeling worn out by someone in your life, pull up a chair.

First, I'd tell you you're not being dramatic

Here's what I'd say before anything else. If you feel tired, tense, or a little smaller after spending time with someone, that's real information. You don't need a big dramatic reason to want distance. Some people just leave a residue. Maybe it's the coworker who complains the second you walk in, or the relative who turns every phone call into a guilt trip. It could be the ex who still finds a way to get under your skin.

You don't have to prove they're a bad person to protect yourself from them. You only have to notice how you feel.

Then I'd ask you to try a few everyday things

I'd start with the simple stuff, because it genuinely helps and it costs nothing.

After a draining visit or call, change the air. Open the windows for ten minutes, even if it's chilly. It sounds too small to matter, but a stale room holds onto a mood, and fresh air shifts it faster than you'd expect.

Clear one surface. Not the whole house. Just the kitchen counter or your nightstand. Clutter tends to hold heavy feelings, and clearing a small spot gives your mind somewhere calm to land.

Wash the day off. A shower after a hard conversation does more than get you clean. Let it mark the line between their energy and your evening.

Put your phone in another room for an hour. So much of what drains us now arrives as a notification. You're allowed to be unreachable for a while.

And keep a short list of people who leave you feeling lighter. Call one of them on the days the heavy ones get to you. It balances the scales.

Next, I'd talk about boundaries you can say out loud

I'd tell a friend that protection isn't only spiritual. It's also the words you use. You can say "I can't talk right now" without explaining. You can leave a conversation that's turning sour. You can stop answering the texts that only ever come with a complaint attached.

None of this has to be harsh. Quiet and consistent works better than a big confrontation. People who drain you often count on you being too polite to step back.

Then I'd tell you where spellwork comes in

Here's where I'd lean in a little, because this is my work and I believe in it.

Everyday habits help a lot, but some people get through no matter how many windows you open. That's when a protective spell makes sense. The protection & boundaries spell is the one I'd point most people to first. It's built for exactly this, shielding you from specific people whose energy keeps getting in. If you want something broader that covers your aura in general, the guardian angel protection spell is gentler and wider. For the really heavy situations, the ultimate protection spell is the strongest shield I offer.

If the toxic person is at work, I'd mention the banishing spell for a toxic coworker. It works on easing the drama around you so your workday stops revolving around one person's mood.

And if you've already absorbed a lot of their negativity, I'd suggest a spiritual cleansing ritual alongside the protection. Think of it like cleaning a wound before you put a bandage on. Plenty of people do both together, and some add a cord cutting spell when they still feel tied to someone they want to step away from. These spells each handle a different piece, so combining them is completely normal.

I'd be honest about what to expect

The next question is always how long it takes, and I'd tell you the truth. As a rough guide only, many people notice they feel less rattled within a week or two. The toxic person might still be around, but their comments land softer. Over a few weeks, some notice that person simply shows up less. That's a loose pattern, not a promise, and everyone's timing is a little different.

I'd also tell you what protection won't do. It won't make someone a nicer person overnight, and it won't make you stop caring about people you love. What it does is help you stop carrying their weight around as if it were your own.

If you want to read more about how heavy energy builds up in the first place, I wrote about it in Seven Myths About Removing Negative Energy. And if the toxic person in your life is an ex, my post on protection after a breakup goes deeper into that.

And I'd end it the same way every time

By dessert, I'd want you to hear one thing more than anything else. You're allowed to protect yourself. Nothing has to be fixed yet for that to be true.

So that's what I'll tell you here too. It's okay. Open the windows, say no a little more often, and get some help shielding your energy if you need it. You deserve to come home full.
